只是一套短篇小说集，但是好像一气呵成似的，有个主线在里面，这是最让人赞叹的。特别是后半部分，从苏珊凯文出场之后，短篇小说之间的关联性就更加明显了，已经可以隐隐看出银河帝国的影子了。

所有小说都是关于机器人的，但实际上写的是人。人在面对自己制造出来的、却强于自己的事物时的恐惧与不安，人在机器人这另一种智慧形式面前所表现出的局限性，以及人对于可能失去万物之灵长地位的危机感，书中都有所反映。对于机器人心理的描写令人叹服，特别是最后一篇《正电子人》，关于主人公安德鲁身为一个特殊机器人的孤独感和想成为一个真正的人的不懈追求描写得非常细腻，读来令人动容。
